LP - Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou
We are very proud and happy to announce the release of our second Lp and our first partnership with the great Analog Africa;
a compilation of rare tracks by the legendary Beninese band Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou!
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is arguably West Africa’s best-kept secret. Their output, both in quantity and quality, was astonishing. It is more than 500 songs that Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou had recorded between 1970 and 1983.
The cultural and spiritual riches of traditional Beninese music had an immense impact on the sound of Benin’s modern music. Benin is the birthplace of Vodun. The rituals that used to pay tributes to the divinities are always backed by music.
Two Vodun rhythms dominate the music of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo: Sato, an amazing, energetic rhythm performed using an immense vertical drum, and Sakpata, a rhythm dedicated to the divinity who protects people from smallpox. Both rhythms are mixed in by the band with Funk, Soul, Crazy organ sounds and Psychedelic guitar riffs.
None of these tracks has been distributed outside Benin while the Golden Years of the band. Because of financial considerations most of these recordings had very limited pressings that rarely exceeded 500 copies
The music in this compilation is not only extremely rare, but illustrates how Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo with the support of a number of local record labels, thrived by mixing the coolest parts of funk, soul, latin and vodun rhythms into a new sound that not only reflected the musical culture and heritage of Benin, but also transformed it and turned the small country into such an incredible musical melting pot.
Cover's graphic production received special care and attention.
Using as references original 7" covers from the band, we worked with the exact same techniques as those used back then to recreate a perfect replica of the design.
Thus, thanks to LetterPress Brasil's invaluable help and knowledge, the covers has been printed with clichés, typographical mounting, Linotype and LetterPress printing (low relief)!
All the production process will be documented soon with pictures and videos! Stay tuned!
